Maybe MS did not think about this one when coding the setup, but it seems so blindingly obvious to me. If anyone knows how I go about suggesting it to the powers that be, please let me know.
Anyway, I can install Vista onto an older IDE disk. After the install it cannot use my Belkin Pre-N wireless PCMCIA card nor has the drivers for the ULI M1575 or Silicon image SIL3112 raid controllers. If I connect the machine via RJ-45 to the router, Vista goes to windows update grabs the drivers installs and them.
However, if I run an upgrade from a working XP install, Vista does it's checks and says it does not like the above drivers, and I need to get Vista compatable ones before it installs. But this is what kills me. When running the upgrade it has an Internet connection. It goes and gets "updated setup files" from the net for cripes sake. Why can it not go to Vista update and grab the required drivers, and store them for use in the install? I know they are there, as I explained above. It's catch-22 I cannot install Vista on the raid disks, because I need Vista installed to get the drivers.

braindead setup when upgrading from XP
You may suggest it yourself by downloading the bug reporting tools from: http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/vista/bugs.aspx?&build=0&sku=0 It will collect relevant files and give MS a good start in breaking the problem down. Good luck.
